He says funding the interstate is a high priority in the Bush Administration and introduces Norman Mineta, U.S. Transportation Secretary. According to Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta “the interstate needs to help our great nation succeed and prosper well into the new century.” |

He also commented on the great turnout of people contributing care packages and letters of support for American forces overseas through OI, an organization that provides the logistics for getting civilian rations, or “C-rats” from civilians to overseas troops. |

After adding his comments about the warm welcome the convoy received, Steve Jarriel talked about the speech by Merrill Eisenhower Atwater at the boyhood home of his great grandfather, President Dwight Eisenhower, the motivator behind the creation of the interstate highway system. |

AASHTO Executive Director John Horsley talks about how the interstate system contributed to the migration of US population to the south and west, areas which are expected to grow 88 % in the next 30 years. |

Telephone interview of historian Dan McNichol, author of The Roads that Built America, who talks about how dependent America is on the interstate system, how the interstate system helped the country grow and the need to maintain and improve the roadways. He also mentioned how effective the highway system was in evacuating people from hurricanes and in keeping our economy moving when air traffic was grounded following the 9-11 events. |

After completing his cross-country journey, Steve Jarriel reports in the NLC TV studio with Dave Gardy. Gary Ridley of the Convoy Management Team, commends the convoy participants for bringing the highway system to national awareness and recreate the visionary spirit that built the interstate. He adds that the from his experience, Americans are united. |

The convoy visited the historic bridge in Emmitsburg, Maryland where Dwight Eisenhower, then a young military officer, first encountered difficulties in a 1919 cross country motor convoy that later motivated Eisenhower, as President, to promote the interstate highway system. |
 |
York Pennsylvania, facing similar transportation issues as other cities, is expanding bus transport while they await development of light rail. York Mayor John Brenner comments that with higher gas prices we all need to change our transportation modes, change our way of thinking and make investments to make our communities better. |
 |
Steve talked about the connectedness of our cities all across the country. For example, containers that arrive by ship are transported by trains and trucks to every city in America. Abilene Kansas Councilman John Zutavern commented about local companies that are involved in the shipping industry. Steve summarized the trip and highlighted the similarities of issues faced by every American community and the warm welcome the convoy received all along the route. |

McNulty, Chief of Staff, Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command welcomed the convoy and talked about the potential Eisenhower saw for military use of a US interstate system similar to the German Autobahn over which American troops traveled to victory. As a result of Ike’s efforts we now have over 46,000 miles of interstate highway that provides safe and efficient movement across the country. |
