Webcast of the IYEF National City Afterschool Summit, May 22-24, 2006
Mayors and councilmembers across the country are leading the way to bring communities together to provide quality, accessible afterschool programs.
By supporting and strengthening afterschool efforts, cities are making major investments in their young people. They understand that afterschool programs improve public safety, help working families, improve academic achievement, and support healthier and happier young people.
On May 22-24, 2006, more than one hundred municipal leaders gathered in Washington, D.C., for the first-ever National City Afterschool Summit, hosted by the YEF Institute to highlight the leadership of local officials in creating, improving and expanding access to afterschool programs for children and youth.
Held in partnership with the Afterschool Alliance's Afterschool for All Challenge, the Summit offered local officials an opportunity to:
- Network and learn from peers about afterschool investment and sustainability strategies, funding options, and strengthening partnerships between cities and schools, communities, and states;
- Meet with Congressional leaders to make afterschool programs a national priority;
- Attend workshops on polling, advocacy, and public engagement; and
- Celebrate the efforts of mayors and councilmembers who are champions for quality afterschool programs.
